The 87th Ice Hockey World Championships will take place from May 10 to May 26, 2024, in the Czech Republic. The tournament will be hosted by the cities of Prague and Ostrava.
The opening ceremony began with a video clip projected onto the central scoreboard, accompanied by the voice of renowned commentator Gord Miller. The clip discussed the evolution of hockey over the decades since its inception.
Fans were surprised by the appearance of Jaromir Jagr, who emerged to applause at the already packed O2 Arena, standing by the Czech bench alongside mascots Bob and Bobek. Subsequently, sixteen dancers formed a circle and introduced all sixteen participating countries.
The Czech President, Petr Pavel, also greeted fans via a video message and was present at the match in the stands.
On the ice, the President of Czech Hockey, Alois Hadamczik, delivered the opening speech, stating, “It is an honor to welcome you to the biggest sports event.
I would like to thank Czech hockey and the organizing committee for their fantastic work. I also thank the cities of Prague and Ostrava and both regions for their financial contributions to the organization,” he continued in English before officially opening the Ice Hockey World Championships 2024.
