Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogačar achieved another significant milestone in his career by winning the prestigious Tour de France for the third time, following his victory in the Giro d’Italia in May. This triumph builds on his previous victories from 2020 and 2021, solidifying his dominance in the cycling world.
In this year’s Tour de France, Pogačar secured a commanding victory, which he crowned by winning the final time trial in Nice. This performance marked his sixth stage win in this year’s Tour, bringing his total number of stage victories to 17.
Pogačar defeated his biggest rival, Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard, who finished in second place. Vingegaard, who recovered from an injury sustained in a crash during the April race in the Basque Country, trailed Pogačar by more than six minutes in the overall standings.
The last cyclist to win both the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia in the same season was Italy’s Marco Pantani in 1998. With his performance this year, Pogačar has joined the elite club of riders who have triumphed in both of these renowned races within a single season.
