The 48th edition of Copa América has kicked off in Atlanta, complementing the ongoing “Eurocopa,” as Americans call the Euro.
This year, and possibly permanently, the traditional ten teams from South America are joined by the six best teams from the North and Central American CONCACAF zone.
The tournament was originally supposed to be hosted by Ecuador due to the traditional rotation of host countries. However, Ecuador declined to host because of insufficient infrastructure.
After a partnership was established between the CONMEBOL and CONCACAF zones, it was decided to move the tournament to the USA.
Since 1916, the oldest ongoing international tournament has been won at least once by every South American country except Ecuador and Venezuela. Mexico has reached the final twice.
